Biography

  • Born: 1961 in Ipswich, England.
  • Educated: Loughborough University - BSc (Hons) Geography; and Birkbeck College, London University - PhD Geography. As a student, Adrian became fascinated by the public engagement with conservation spaces - not only among visitors to those spaces, but also among the more active stakeholders such as campaigners, citizen scientists and conservation professionals.
  • 1986 - Research Tour of the Scottish Highlands, mainly concerning contemporary walkers' experience within the natural landscapes of Sutherland.
  • 1987 - Research Tour to Iona, Scotland, focusing on contemporary walkers' experience at the Abbey and among natural landscapes.

  • 2020 - On 11 May, Felixstowe's Community Nature Reserve achieved its 5th anniversary. The Felixstowe Citizen Science Group published an Impact Analysis on progress so far.

  • 2020 - August: Interviewed by Lesley Dolphin on BBC Radio Suffolk with David Roberts from the Sustainable Schools Network.
  • 2020 - August: Success of Felixstowe's Community Nature Reserve was featured in the East Anglian Daily Times.
  • 2020 - November: The i-newspaper featured Felixstowe's Community Nature Reserve in its focus on community-based conservation in the UK. The print version of this feature appeared on 21 November, pages 32 - 33.
  • 2021 - January: The RSPB's magazine Nature's Home featured Felixstowe's Community Nature Reserve in its Winter / Spring edition on pages 88, 89 and 90. The feature was written by Adrian Thomas.
  • 2021 - January: The National Biodiversity Network published 'Managing the value of R technology in citizen science'
  • 2021 - March: Speaker at the Nature First online conference, organized by the East Suffolk Greenprint Forum. 
  • 2021 - November: Felixstowe's Community Nature Reserve received a Highly Commended award from Suffolk County Council at their Greenest Communities event.
  • 2022 - January: Felixstowe's Community Nature Reserve was featured twice in the latest edition of the WildEast newsletter. One article featured one of our members. The other article discussed our approach to urban greening.
  • 2022 - July: Felixstowe's Climate Justice march (2 July) Pre-event publicity featured in the East Anglian Daily Times. Post-event publicity was also featured in the East Anglian Daily Times
  • 2022 - July: The Suffolk Biodiversity Information Service published Adrian's article 'Creating Sustainability in Community-based Conservation' in their Summer News Letter, pages 13 - 14. The National Biodiversity Network also published the article in their July News Letter
  • 2022 - September: 25th anniversary of the publication of Sacred Mountains: Ancient Wisdom and Modern Meanings
  • 2023 - January: Lectures at Suffolk New College, Ipswich, UK, on Conservation, Biodiversity and Sustainability. 
  • 2023 - March: Interviewed on the Radio Suffolk Breakfast Show in support of the Wild Isles BBC documentary.      (Interviewer: Luke Deal; date: 13 March 2023)
  • 2023 - April: Felixstowe's Citizen Science Group celebrated their 5th anniversary. 
  • 2023 - April: The work of Felixstowe's Community Nature Reserve was included in the BBC Radio 4 Open Country episode, broadcast on 6 April.  
  • 2023 - August: Elected as European Citizen Science Ambassador for the UK
  • 2023 - October: Creation of the UK Citizen Science Network website.
  • 2024 - January: New podcast created by BC fm about Felixstowe's Community Nature Reserve.
  • Adrian's other activities include the leadership of Felixstowe's Community Nature Reserve and the Felixstowe Citizen Science Group. He conducts his own research into biogeographical themes in local woodland and river estuaries. He also enjoys music, art and writing. Adrian lives in Suffolk,
